Oracle Client 11g Client 64bit Direct Download: Best Practices and Recommendations for Oracle Databa

This document describes the installation process for the Oracle 12c Client software.The University of Wisconsin-Madison doesn't require any particular version installation of the Oracle client, but for best compatibility, it is recommended users install the 12c client.It is NOT recommended users running the Oracle 11g client update to 12c unless they are experiencing technical issues with the 11g client.

On the 'Specify Installation Location' screen change the default 'Oracle Base' location to C:\app\, and Software Location to C:\app\client\product\12.2.0\client_1. Click 'Next >' to continue with the installation.

Checking Oracle client software: There are three methods for checking the Oracle client software. Windows has a different lib directory for 32-bit software and 64-bit software. The fastest way to see if an Oracle Client is 64bit or 32bit, too look for "lib32" and "lib" folders under ORACLE_HOME.

In the directory that you created on Step 1, create the network directory. Inside the network directory, create the admin directory. The overall path should look as follows: /Oracle/instantclient_19_8/network/admin.

Using pc-client-local-cache.exe is recommended on large networks. It does, however, require a globally writable cache directory. By default, the cache is created in a directory on the system drive (normally C:\Cache). You can specify an alternate cache with the --cache command-line switch. Administrators should ensure that standard users have write access to the system drive, or manually create the cache directory if required.

The User Client software is available as a silent-install MSI (no clicks or wizards). This option is available for advanced sites that already leverage MSI packages for automated software deployment and upgrades using Active Directory Group Policy options. We recommend using the pc-client-local-cache.exe version of the User Client for most deployments, as all updates are automatically pushed to client machines. The MSI option discussed here must be manually updated.

Oracle Instant Client is a lightweight client that you can install on your computer or on an Amazon EC2 instance. Oracle Instant Client includes the impdp and expdp utilities that you can use to perform the export and import operations from the command line.

4. Follow the instructions in the Oracle documentation for Installing Oracle Instant Client Using RPM. This process installs the binaries in the default location /usr/lib/oracle/example-client-version/client64. For example, if you download the binaries for version 19.16, then the default binary location for the installation is /usr/lib/oracle/19.16/client64/bin.

7. Create your configuration files, such as tnsnames.ora and sqlnet.ora, in the following location: /usr/lib/oracle/ example-client-version/client64/lib/network/admin. In this example, the location will be: /usr/lib/oracle/19.16/client64/lib/network/admin.

To connect to Oracle, you will also need to install the Oracle client software on the machine where you have installed the on-premises data gateway. Specifically, the Oracle Database connection requires the installation of the 64-bit Oracle Data Provider for .NET. You can use the following link to download and install the Oracle client:

If you have multiple Oracle clients installed on your system, ensure that the correct Oracle client files are used to connect to Oracle by setting the configuration variable MS_ORACLE_HOME in the configuration file "..\Bentley\MicroStation\MicroStation\config\database\oracle.cfg".
